The Associated Press Media Editors will meet again in Nashville on Sept. 19-21, 2012, at the beautiful John Seigenthaler Center on the Vanderbilt University campus.

Nashville's Frist Center for the Visual Arts, venue for the Sept. 19 reception on the opening night of APME Nashville 2012, will offer conference participants and guests an early look at an exhibition devoted to contemporary artist and photographer Carrie Mae Weems. The exhibition -- the first major museum retrospective devoted to Weems’ work -- will open to the public on Sept. 21. Weems is widely regarded as one of today’s most eloquent and respected interpreters of the African-American experience. The Frist exhibition contains 225 photographs, installations, and videos from more than 15 museums and private collections.APME guests are invited to the Frist for this special presentation and for the annual APME Foundation auction. Unleash Your Watchdog – Pulitzer winner Michael Berens of the Seattle Times tells editors the best ways to identify and pursue powerful watchdog stories from everyday records using investigative techniques and strategies that lift high-impact enterprise from daily beats and help newsrooms create authoritative work on multiple platforms.
Government Secrecy and the Fight for Public Information – National Press Foundation President Bob Meyers leads a critical discussion on the increase in government secrecy and the fight for public information. Panelists will discuss how the FOIA process has been slowed or outright corrupted, and other recent roadblocks the government has erected that threaten the free flow of information and the public's right to know.
Small is Beautiful: APME Community Journalism Initiative Winner – Good journalism is practiced in newsrooms of all sizes and affects communities of all sizes. That’s one lesson from the Daily Citizen of Beaver Dam, Wis., winner of APME's Community Journalism Public Service Initiative competition. A representative of the Daily Citizen explains the winning initiative – a project on the impact of mental health care in a rural community that combined traditional print with online and social media interaction.

Content Outsourcing: New Directions for Local News – Chicken dinner news. School lunch menus. Calendars. Routine police blotter items. Print and online readers love such hyper-local content. Our staffs, not so much – as we push them to produce more hard-hitting enterprise journalism. Against that backdrop, the push to outsource hyper-local content makes sense to a lot of news organizations. Alan Miller, managing editor of the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch moderates a discussion of the issue with Brian Timpone, CEO of Journatic, and David Arkin, vice president of content and interactive at Gatehouse Media.
Make Community Partnerships Work for Your Newsroom – Martin Reynolds, senior editor for community engagement with the Bay Area News Group in Northern California, hosts a discussion about the best ways to forge partnerships and collaborations with universities, foundations, nonprofits and other community stakeholders.
Extend Your Reporting With Mobile – Val Hoeppner, director of education at the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute, will lead a dynamic session focusing on the use of mobile technology to report faster and on multimedia-on-the-go as an essential skill for today's journalist. This workshop will teach you to extend the capabilities of your smart phone through the use of multimedia, editing, note taking, utility, location and live streaming apps.

Is There More to Social Media Than Being Liked? Why are we tweeting and hanging out on Facebook when we have a newspaper to put out – and with fewer people than previously. Ellyn Angelotti of the Poynter Institute will moderate a panel discussion on best ways to make social media campaigns effective, how to measure our social media effectiveness, and strategies for using social media to engage more deeply audiences that might help us generate revenue.
You First Saw This on Twitter and Facebook – The methods companies use to get their message out has changed. Find out what they’re doing and why and how well it works, and learn some techniques you might be able to use in your organization. Moderator will be Jack Lail, website director for the Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel.
