NewsTrain in Madison, Wis., April 29-30, 2011

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
NewsTrain hit the seating limit for the Madison workshop, and we have had to shut down registration. We are creating a waiting list, however. If new vacancies occur because someone tells us they cannot attend, we will admit new participants in the order that they signed up for our waiting list.

Workshop information:

Wisconsin State Journal and Wisconsin Newspaper Association will host a NewsTrain workshop in Madison on Friday-Saturday, April 29-30.

The workshop will be held at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, 3841 East Washington Ave., Madison, WI 53704. Phone: 608-244-3481.

Registration costs $50 for one or both days.

Program highlights:

  • One track for reporters and one track for editors.
  • Each track will begin on Friday morning and end on Saturday afternoon. Participants may attend the whole workshop or any portion of it. Some specific seminars will be full-group sessions for both reporters and editors.

Your $50 fee is expected in advance of the workshop to hold your spot. You may pay by credit card online when you register, or you may mail in a check.

Faculty members

DAVID ARKIN is the executive director of the News & Interactive Division for GateHouse Media. He oversees all content direction and training for GateHouse Media newsrooms in print and online. David is responsible for all existing and new product development for GateHouse newsrooms and the News & Interactive Division, in addition to operating GHNewsroom.com, the company's readership site, and handling special projects. He serves frequently on industry panels and is involved with various newspaper associations. David has served as the top editor of four daily newspapers, The Huntsville (Texas) Item, The Porterville Recorder (Calif.), The Cullman Times (Ala.) and Greater Niagara Newspapers and the Niagara Falls Gazette (N.Y.). He led all of those newspapers to general excellence awards. David has won state and regional awards for writing and design, and community service awards for leading projects that improved the communities he has lived in. darkin@corp.gatehousemedia.com

RUSTY COATS has worked in interactive media for 15 years, driving audience and revenue for such news companies as McClatchy, Media General and E.W. Scripps. He is an architect of the multi-faceted Newspaper Consortium/Yahoo! Partnership, which now includes more than 800 newspapers and drives tens of millions of dollars in digital revenues. As VP of Interactive at E.W. Scripps, Rusty aligned the company under the vision of "56.2012,” a numerical rally cry meaning that by 2012, the company would drive $56 million in pure interactive revenue – a dollar amount that would fully pay for the newsroom budgets across the company. Rusty has worked in interactive media since 1993, first as a technology reporter covering Silicon Valley for McClatchy News Service, later building The Modesto Bee’s first website. He then went on to run websites for The Sacramento Bee, The Star Tribune in Minneapolis and TBO.com, the website for the Tampa Tribune and Tampa’s Channel 8 television. He also served as Director of New Media for Frank N. Magid Associates, consulting with a wide range of media companies in North America and Europe to develop interactive strategies. rusty@coats2coats.com

MARGARET HOLT is standards editor at the Chicago Tribune, working closely with reporters and editors about issues of accuracy, fairness and ethics. She has a particular interest in urban issues and diversity of coverage and regularly meets with community leaders and groups to discuss coverage. Also, Holt has a background in training and staff development; she is a past chair of the Mid-America Press Institute and represents the Tribune on the MPI board. Additionally, she works with colleagues at other Tribune Co. newsrooms on the company's editorial ethics code and practices, including online and multimedia news platforms. A graduate of the University of Missouri, Holt has held a variety of reporting and editing jobs, becoming business editor of the Sun-Sentinel of South Florida in 1987. She joined the Tribune, a sister newspaper, as sports editor in 1993. In 1995, she began working on customer and accuracy matters for the newsroom; she is a frequent speaker at media workshops and conferences on accuracy and credibility. A member of the Native American Journalists Association, Holt also volunteers each year at a Crazy Horse Memorial workshop aimed at introducing young people from reservations to possible journalism careers. mcholt@tribune.com


MARILYN KRAUSE is assistant managing editor/administration for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She is responsible for the financial and business side of the newsroom; and she works with newsroom training, recruiting and hiring. She also is liaison and negotiator with the Newspaper Guild, liaison for professional conferences and community events; and oversees the newsroom’s internship program. She also has been a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute for its New Leaders in the Newsroom seminar. She joined The Milwaukee Journal as a reporter in 1987 and later became an editor. Prior to taking her current position, she was an assistant metro editor for the Journal Sentinel, supervising the Health/Science team. She also had prior reporting positions at area weekly newspapers. She is a director and past president of the Milwaukee Press Club, chairman of the Journal Communications Women’s Leadership Network and a member of Tempo, a women’s business networking group, where she serves on the membership and communications committees. BRYAN MURLEY is assistant professor for new and emerging media and adviser of the online pacemaker-winning dennews.com at Eastern Illinois University. He is the primary author of the Innovation in College Media weblog (www.collegemediainnovation.org) and researches journalism and online media.



AMBER PALUCH is the local news editor at the Green Bay Press-Gazette, overseeing the news, sports, business and features departments as well as the newspaper's weekly publications. She is a mentor in the Gannett Mentoring Program and is involved in trainingfor all editorial departments at the Press-Gazette and within Gannett Wisconsin Media. She annually judges the Northeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association contestand works with her alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, on development of its journalism programs and as a speaker atJournalism Department events. Paluch is a recruiter for the Press-Gazette and represents the newspaper through speaking engagements with local organizations. She started her career as a reporter at the Wausau Daily Herald, where she won aBest of Gannett award for a series on taxes. Shewas metro editor at the Daily Heraldbefore joining the Press-Gazette in 2005.The Press-Gazette was named Newspaper of the Year by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association in 2007.

MICHAEL ROBERTS is a newsroom trainer and consultant who works with news organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. From 2003-2010, Roberts was Deputy Managing Editor Staff Development at The Arizona Republic, responsible for all newsroom training, served as writing coach, and edited major projects. In Phoenix, Roberts was part of the leadership team that transformed the Republic into one of Gannett's new Information Centers. Outside his own newsrooms, Roberts helped create and launch NewsTrain, designed and taught API's first online seminar for copy editors, and has presented programs for the Poynter Institute, American Press Institute, the Maynard Institute, Freedom Forum, and various National Writers Workshops. Before the Republic, Roberts was Features Editor, AME/Features-Business, and then for 10 years the Training Editor/Writing Coach at The Cincinnati Enquirer. He also worked as a writer and editor at the Midland (MI) Daily News, the Detroit Free Press, and as a senior editor at two magazines. He taught feature writing at the University of Cincinnati and regularly presented programs at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Arizona State University.
