REMINDER: SEPT. 15 DEADLINE FOR GROUP RATE AT STANFORD CONFERENCE HOTEL
Don’t wait to book your hotel room for the ASNE-APME conference Oct. 16-18 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
The group rate is available at the Sheraton Palo Alto until Sept. 15 for only $169/night for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rates for Wednesday and Thursday are $329/night. Make a reservation online or call the hotel directly at 650-328-2800 and mention the block of rooms reserved for ASNE and APME. The Associated Press Photo Managers is also a partner in the conference.
The conference promises to be one of the best.
The theme for the Silicon Valley conference is 3-D: Digital, Diversity, Disruption.
On Friday evening, the conference will start with a talk on creativity by David Kelly, founder of the Institute of Design at Stanford and a creator of the Apple mouse. It will be followed by a reception where you can sip California wine with friends, listen to stand-up comedy and bid in the annual live and silent auctions of great items.
Highlights of some of the exciting sessions Saturday and Sunday:
- Tom Rosenstiel of the American Press Institute will start Saturday with “What’s New, What’s Next,” looking as what the future has in store for the news industry.
- The ASNE-APME awards luncheon on Saturday will celebrate the best in journalism.
- “The War on Science: What Journalists Need to Know” will explore later Saturday why millions of Americans reject what science says about topics like global warming.
- “Startup Stories: What Journalists Can Learn from Silicon Valley” on Sunday will feature entrepreneurs sharing their experiences starting innovative new media ventures.
- Davan Maharaj, editor of the Los Angeles Times, will be the keynote speaker at Sunday’s lunch.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY AT STANFORD’S d.school FOR CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS
Attendees at the ASNE-APME conference are being offered an exceptional opportunity by Stanford’s Institute for Design – or the d.school – which is a renowned hub for innovation at the university.
The d.school is offering a FREE workshop Friday, Oct. 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – just before the start of the ASNE-APME conference – for a limited group of editors who register for the conference.
Here’s the description of the workshop:
1-4 p.m. Pre-conference event: Hands-on design thinking seminar
Using design thinking as a framework, workshop participants will tackle a hands-on innovation challenge. Participants will complete the workshop with an understanding of the key tenets of design thinking in the newsroom and a sense for ways they can incorporate this into their work.
Limited to 50 participants who have registered for the ASNE-APME Conference. Advance sign-up required.

APPLY FOR APME EDITOR EXCHANGE TO IMPROVE YOUNG JOURNALISTS
The Associated Press Media Editors is accepting applications for the 2015-2016 Editor Educator Exchange, a partnership that puts editors in college classrooms and journalism educators in the newsrooms of APME members. The goal is to help journalism programs stay abreast of the rapid changes occurring in U.S. newsrooms.
NEWSTRAIN WORKSHOPS OFFER DIGITAL TRAINING
Four NewsTrain workshops will offer training in the digital skills identified by local journalists as vital to their success.
· Monroe, Louisiana, Oct. 15-16, 2015, social media, mobile newsgathering, data-driven enterprise reporting, mobile-first breaking news coverage, journalism ethics in the digital age.
· DeKalb, Illinois, (65 miles west of Chicago) Oct. 29-30, 2015, social media, smartphone video, audience analytics, data-driven enterprise reporting, beat mapping, creative local features coverage.
· Philadelphia, Nov. 13-14, 2015, a digital-storytelling boot camp including social media, data-driven enterprise reporting, smartphone video and photos, writing news for mobile.
· Lexington, Kentucky, Jan. 21, 2016, social media, smartphone video, data-driven enterprise reporting.
Registration fee: $75.
