Washington Post editor comments on survey
By PHIL BENNETT
April 4, 2005
Thanks so much for sharing the results of your spot survey on unnamed sources. This frustrating practice continues to flower in our newsroom like the weed that can't be killed, despite our decrees designed to root it out. We have issued guidelines over the last year requiring reporters to disclose the identities of unnamed sources to their editors, press sources to go on the record, or omit comments provided anonymously that do not contribute specific evidence to a story. In our better moments, we've declined to participate in 'background briefings' with government officials who have required anonymity while advocating official positions. The Slatkin example cited by the committee is a clear violation of these principles. In addressing what's become an issue of newsroom culture, as well as a product of increasingly secretive Washington, we have our work cut out for us.
I'm grateful for the work of the committee and would be interested in any other findings you develop about The Post's content or that of our colleagues.
Regards,
Phil Bennett
