High school football, as you want it

By TIM KOLODZIEJ / The New Castle (Pa.) News editor

Here's an example of the New Castle News attempting to own the high school football market on a typical week:

Thursday afternoon newspaper: A preview of the big game of the week we call "Hot Ticket."

Thursday afternoon "Quick Click": We send out our weekly "Quick Picks" e-mail edition, where our sports writers pick the weekend's winners. We also break down the big game a little more, offering "players to watch" and "game night weather."

Friday morning radio: Our local partner, WKST, previews our football coverage during the morning radio show.

Friday afternoon newspaper: Capsule previews of all the weekend's high school football games.

Friday night cell phone: We text-message high school football scores to subscribers by 10:15 p.m. Target audience: football players, cheerleaders and fans heading home from the games.

Friday night "Quick Click": We e-mail our Friday night "Quick Scores" edition to subscribers by 10:45 p.m. in an effort to beat local TV sports, which usually airs around 11:15.

Saturday morning online: Our viewers see "Game of the Week" video highlights and photo galleries from Friday night's biggest game.

Saturday morning newspaper: A four-page, full-color high school football section wrapping sports. It features game stories, photos, "Friday's Finest" selections, coaches comments, scores from across the state and box scores.
