Access to the Internet – General Public

As shown below, 75% of the 493 respondents had access to the Internet either at home or at work, and 25% did not. This result is consistent with other survey findings based on national samples in the United States (All the editors had access to the Internet either at home or work).

Table 2A: How often do you get local news from the Internet?

Description Percent (%)
Every day 16.7
Several times a week 11.3
About once a week 7.5
Less than once a week 3.0
Once a month 3.8
Less than once a month 1.1
Hardly ever 22.4
Not at all 34.2
(n = 371)

Notice that Table 2A displays the percentages of use of the Internet for local news based on 371 respondents, that is, the 75% of the 500 respondents that had access to the Internet at home or work. Table 2B shows the percentages excluding those who "hardly ever" or "not at all" used the Internet for local news.

Table 2B: How often do you get local news from the Internet?

(Excluding "hardly ever" & "not at all" users)

Description Percent (%)
Every day 38.5
Several times a week 26.1
About once a week 17.4
Less than once a week 6.8
Once a month 8.7
Less than once a month 2.5
(n = 161)

According to the survey, 161 of the 500 respondents (32.2%) were users of online local news. However, if excluding the 25% of respondents that did not have access to the Internet, the ratio was 43.4% (161 divided by 371 that had access to the Internet).

When asked "when getting local news through the Internet, is it usually because you seek out the news or is it usually because you just happen to come across it?" 67% of the 161 online local news users said they sought out the local news, 25% happened to come across the news, and eight percent "some of both."

Table 3: Where do you go online most frequently for local news?

Description Percent (%)
The website of a newspaper 36.6
The website of a television station 28.0
An independent website 26.1
Others 5.6
Don't know/Not sure 3.7
(n = 161)

As shown above, nearly 37% of the 161 online local news users would go to the website of a newspaper, 28% through the website of a television, and 26% through an independent website such as Yahoo, MSN, Google, and etc.
