Career summary: I was promoted to deputy managing editor at the AJC in 2004 after coming to the paper in 2003 as a deputy features editor. Prior to the AJC, I worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1991-94 and again from 1996-2003. I had various positions at the Inquirer, including copy editor, online news editor, assistant bureau chief, and editor of the Friday entertainment section. From 1994-96, I left journalism and moved to China,
where I taught English and studied Mandarin Chinese. Before working at the Inquirer, I worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer as a copy editor/news editor from 1989-91. I started my journalism career as a reporting intern at my hometown paper, the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria, Ohio.
Recent accomplishments: Led online coverage of the Atlanta courthouse shooting, which won a first-place APME award in 2005. Helped ajc.com achieve a 19 percent increase in page views over the same period a year ago.
APME activities: I was a panelist at the 2005 convention for a session on print-online integration.
APME should: Embrace the changes in technology, the way news is gathered, and the way it is consumed. Be fearless about examining what the journalism of tomorrow will look like and how we can best be positioned to take advantage of the changes – as it relates to our content and to our business model. Our thinking must be creative and unconventional. We need to be the visionaries and not be fearful and reactionary to the way the world – and our profession – is changing.
In my spare time: I write sketch comedy for an Atlanta troupe and I'm very involved in independent film and video production. I also write for a reality TV web site.
