The board of directors of the Associated Press Managing Editors has announced the appointment of Laura Kessel, managing editor of The News-Herald in Willoughby, Ohio, as a member of the board.

Kessel will fill a one-year, unexpired term created when the board reinstated the Journalism Studies chair on to the leadership ladder.

"We’re delighted to have Laura join the APME board,” said APME President Hollis R. Towns, executive editor of the Asbury Park Press in Neptune, N.J. "Coming from a small newspaper, she'll help us take on projects such as training that benefits everyone in journalism today."

Kessel has been managing editor at The News-Herald (Journal Register Co.) for four years. Prior to that she was a page designer, copy editor and news editor at the News-Herald, Valley News-Dispatch/North Hills News Record in Tarentum, Pa., and The Morning Journal in Lorain, Ohio.
