The Winnipeg Free Press is the August winner of APME's Innovator of the Month contest. The paper is honored for its innovative work in election night coverage.

APME's Innovator of the Year, now in its fifth year, has expanded in 2011 by naming an innovation of the month. Winnipeg is the first winner from Canada.

Here's how the entry submitted by Julie Carl, deputy editor, described the newspaper's work:

"The Winnipeg Free Press' coverage of a municipal election was like nothing else the paper had done before. Portions of live coverage were captured on tape. The paper combined live streaming with tweeting, dynamic updating of results, and traditional text stories, on a night when every TV station had reneged on its responsibility.

"The paper live streamed from 8:30 p.m. until the final election staffers left. The paper's host monitored live results as they were posted and chatted with two municipal experts. Reporters were in major candidates' campaign headquarters tweeting into the Cover-It-Live console on the main page with results as they were available and reaction to them.

"The Winnipeg Free Press fully democratized coverage with the Cover-It-Live chat console, as viewers could comment and debate the impact of the vote."
