Editors take note: This year's conference is chock-full of journalism goodness
The Associated Press Media Editors 2013 conference "Content Is King” is less than two weeks away -- Oct. 28-30 at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis.
There will be a lot of takeaways - and a lot of social activities at the conference.
Conference sessions include Sports Coverage and Access, First Amendment Showdown, Change Management, Keeping Print Alive, The New Ethics, Metering Mania, How to Reset Your Coverage and Priorities, and The Associated Press Spotlight.
Among the speakers are: Terry Kroeger, CEO of BH Media Group and publisher of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald; Gene Policinski, executive director of the First Amendment Center; Butch Ward, veteran news executive and a managing director of the Poynter Institute; Bill Day of Frank N. Magid Associates; Kelly McBride of the Poynter Institute; and Greg Swanson, partner and CEO of ITZ Publishing.
Kathleen Carroll, AP senior vice president and executive editor, will lead a panel of AP editors in a discussion of the story behind the story of some of the year’s most inspiring coverage and of the news service’s new initiatives.
The annual awards luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 30, will honor winners of the APME Journalism Excellence contests.
One-on-one coaching sessions are available, on a first-come first-serve basis, with Butch Ward of the Poynter Institute and Rosalie Stemer, a newsroom coach and editor, who will offer suggestions for creating superior content on deadline.
The stylish Indiana Roof Ballroom will be the site of the welcoming reception and auction on Monday, Oct. 28. Hang out at the Italian-inspired bar. Go back to campus night on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at a reception at the NCAA Hall of Champions. You'll be able to walk through the history of all 23 NCAA-sanctioned sports, test your knowledge of sports trivia, view artifacts from campuses across the country, and compete virtually and hands-on in an interactive play area.
If you like to explore, you won’t have to venture far in Indianapolis. APME’s conference takes place in White River State Park, billed as a "cultural urban state park” because of its walkability, museums, gardens, green space, canal and Indianapolis Zoo. Lions, editors and water rides,.

There are two ways to support the work of APME, which is celebrating its 80th year as an organization this year.

Two receive Robert G. McGruder Awards for Diversity Leadership
Reginald Stuart, veteran journalist and corporate recruiter, and the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle are the recipients of the 12th annual Robert G. McGruder Awards for Diversity Leadership, awarded by the Associated Press Media Editors in partnership with other journalism organizations.
The McGruder Award for Diversity Leadership is given annually to individuals, newsrooms or teams of journalists who embody the spirit of McGruder, a former executive editor of the Detroit Free Press, managing editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland and a graduate of Kent State University. McGruder died of cancer in April 2002. A past president of APME and former member of the American Society of News Editors’ Board of Directors, McGruder was a relentless diversity champion. The awards will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at the annual awards lunch at the APME conference in Indianapolis.

For APME's 80th year, we've got a stunning array of items up for bid at the opening night reception and Foundation Auction Oct. 28 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

You'll want to be there for this gathering at our annual conference, but just in case, here is a list of some of the great grabs, a few you can even bid on from afar. These bids will be the starting point for the Oct. 28 live auction at the conference.
