APME SENDS LETTER TO RNC OVER ACCESS FEES AT CONVENTION

The Associated Press Media Editors joined The Associated Press in sending a letter to the Republican National Convention Committee expressing concern about its decision to charge journalists an access fee to cover the 2016 nominating convention.

“We are concerned about the RNCC access fee decision because we believe journalists should not have to pay to cover party officials and delegates (many of them public officials) as they engage in a highly public event of significance to civic life,” the APME said in its letter.

The APME noted that reporters who don’t pay will be admitted to the convention, but not allowed on the floor or given access to certain other areas.

The group said the fee “smacks of a ‘pay-for-play’ scheme” and “sets a horrible precedent.”

Other news organizations who plan to cover next summer's convention also have protested the move by the RNCC to charge news media organizations a $150 access fee for seats on the press stand. The four-day event will be held in Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena.
