This is the July 2006 Member Showcase photo of the month, as judged by APME. Heat waves distort the setting sun as firefighter Dustin Orthman lights a backfire to help save the town of Custer, Mont., from the Pine Ridge fire Friday, July 14, 2006. The fire threat caused authorities to urge residents of Custer, a tiny town just off I-94, to prepare for possible evacuation, said Jim Kraft, Yellowstone County disaster and emergency services coordinator.

The Associated Press Managing Editors association awards Member Showcase Photo honors each month for the best image shared by a newspaper with other Associated Press photo users. The competition is judged by a panel of AP and member photo editors. The best of the monthly Showcase photos receives a Member Showcase Photo prize at the APME annual conference in October.
