September 2006 Showcase Photo

This is the September 2006 Member Showcase photo of the month, as judged by APME. Defendant Justin Michael Kalich, of New Stanton, Pa. sits with a box on his head, Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, outside District Judge James Albert's courtroom, at the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greensburg, Pa. Kalich's attorney, Jeff Leonard, said he decided that wearing the box would be in his client's best interest. Leonard explained that there was an issue about whether a witness would be able to identify his client in connection with a July theft of reel wire. The witness might see a photo lineup before his client went into the courtroom for a hearing, Leonard said, and he didn't want the witness to see Kalich's face before that. Sitting at right is Michelle Lewis, of Homer City, Pa., who was waiting for another hearing.

The Associated Press Managing Editors association awards Member Showcase Photo honors each month for the best image shared by a newspaper with other Associated Press photo users. The competition is judged by a panel of AP and member photo editors. The best of the monthly Showcase photos receives a Member Showcase Photo prize at the APME annual conference in October.
