PAPERS GET QUICK FOR BUSY READERS The St. Paul Pioneer Press and the Wisconsin State Journal carry nearly identical-looking ribbons at the bottoms of their covers. Both feature five items meant to stimulate, educate, entertain and, in some cases, encourage readers to dive inside their newspapers. The Pioneer Press calls its ribbon 5 Fast Facts, and all refer to stories deep inside the paper. These aren't your typical front-page promos. They often are mined from stories and items that don't usually get promoted out front, such as columnists, box scores and reader alerts. The State Journal's 5 On The Fly is designed with harried parents and others like them in mind. Some refer to inside stories. Others are simply factoids about important events or controversies or items that give readers an entertaining break in their day.
