SUMMER ISSUE OF APME NEWS IN THE MAIL This issue's must reads include: • Blogging power: Oscar Martinez, senior editor for news at DallasNews.com, details how the site's Hoops Scoops blog grew into a popular feature in print and online – and which continues to be a huge traffic driver despite being on summer hiatus. • Luring young readers with substance: Lance Johnson of The Day in New London, Conn., highlights coverage from five papers that are reaching out to younger readers by giving them meaty stuff, not fluff. • You Make the Call: Rick Hall, managing editor of the Deseret Morning News and co-chairman of APME's Credibility Committee, asks editors how they handle blogs and the ethical concerns they raise. • Editor's wish lists: A new APME survey details the skills editors nationwide are seeking in job applicants. • Ask the AP: Mike Silverman, AP's managing editor, answers questions on serial narratives, improving the accuracy of breaking news and the new service's plans for ongoing coverage of government efforts to reconstruct areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina. • "Easy does it": Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose writes about the huge outpouring of support New Orleans residents gave librarians visiting the city in June – the first major convention in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Plus: A native's tips on where to go, what to eat, what to do and how to talk when visiting New Orleans. • Diversity and revenue: Jim Jenks, executive sports editor of the Philadephia Inquirer and new president of the Associated Press Sports Editors, lays out two priorities for the coming year: improving staff diversity and developing workshops to help sports editors identify how their sections can help generate revenue. UPDATED CONFERENCE SCHEDULE Details on the schedule can be found by clicking here. You can register by clicking here. AP SOUNDING BOARD NO. 44: REVAMPED NEWS DIGESTS As a result of the survey, AP plans to • Continue to leave headlines off individual stories. • Keep the digest lines tight, but provide more detail when appropriate to clearly convey the focus of a story. • Explain all slugs in a minimum of words, unless the meaning is clear. • Consider adding to the "New and Developing" and "Also Getting Attention" sections. Details on the survey, complete responses from the 18 participating editors and links to the previous 43 Sounding Board questions are at the Sounding Board page on APME.com.
