HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO HELP IMPROVE THE A.P. REPORT
Is someone in your newsroom willing to spend a few minutes a month to give feedback to the A.P. on news content and service? We're looking for a couple of dozen volunteers for our Sounding Board committee. Every few weeks we'll e-mail a short list of questions. In the past, we've asked how A.P.'s coverage stacked up on important stories like elections or Olympics. We've queried editors on the usefulness of the news digests.

Sounding Board members do not have to be managing editors. Indeed, in large newsrooms this is probably a task best left to the front-line editors who handle the wire report.

To sign up someone from your newsroom, please send the editor's name, job title and e-mail address to Sounding Board chairman Troy Turner (tturner@daily-times.com) at the Daily Times in Farmington, N.M., and to vice chair Kevin Whitmer (kwhitmer@starledger.com) at the Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J.

BETTER YOURSELF AND OUR INDUSTRY: JOIN AN APME COMMITTEE
As we gear up for the new year, now's the time to join an APME committee. What's in it for you? The opportunity to work with fellow editors who are smart and passionate and who want to see their newsrooms and our industry thrive.

APME is an organization that gets things done, and the works starts in our committees. To join us, please e-mail any of our 2006-07 committee chairs. The committees and their leaders are:

• Innovation: Targets innovations that help editors reach more news consumers more frequently.

Chair: Scott W. Angus, vice president of news for Bliss Communications, Janesville, Wis., and editor of the company's Janesville Gazette. sangus@gazetteextra.com

• Credibility: Identifies best practices involving ethics, accuracy, fairness, taste and similar issues.

Chair: Jennifer Houtman, managing editor, The Marietta (Ohio) Times. jhoutman@mariettatimes.com

• Diversity: Works to improve diversity and retention efforts in our industry. Recognizes outstanding diversity coverage.

Chair: Calvin Stovall, executive editor, Press & Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y. cstovall@binghamt.gannett.com

• First Amendment: Fights for freedom of information and aggressive watchdog journalism on multiple platforms. Ensures that APME is a leading voice on First Amendment issues. Work with APPM and APSE on First Amendment issues.

Chair: Otis Sanford, managing editor, Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial Appeal. sanford@commercialappeal.com

• Multimedia: Helps newsrooms become multimedia centers. This includes great ideas, training and standards.

Chair: Mike Davis, Journal Interactive editor, Milwaukee, Wis. davis@jsonline.com

SAVE THE DATE
Next year's APME conference will be Oct. 3-6 in Washington, D.C. There are two big reasons to join us. We'll have one of the first tours of the new Newseum. And we guarantee you'll go home with 500 ideas for your newsroom.

All managing editors, online editors, assistant managing editors, deputy managing editors and senior editors are invited.
