Here is a copy of a letter that was e-mailed last week protesting the raid on The Breeze at James Madison University.

Marsha L. Garst
Commonwealth’s Attorney, Rockingham County
and the City of Harrisonburg
Judicial Center
53 Court Square
Harrisonburg, VA 22801

Dear Ms. Garst:

I write on behalf of APME, an association of editors and news directors throughout North America whose media organizations subscribe to the Associated Press, to protest the improper seizure of more than 900 published and unpublished images from The Breeze at James Madison University.

Your actions in this instance are an affront not only to a free press but to the people of a democratic society and to the laws and constitutions of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The raid on the The Breeze has drawn nationwide attention to the conduct of your office.

We ask that you immediately return to The Breeze its improperly seized property, and we urge that you apologize to the students and faculty of James Madison University and to the citizens of Rockingham County.
