The Associated Press Media Editors has honored this photograph as National Member Photo of the Month forOctober 2018.
Thanks to Rich Saal and Ted Schurter of The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill., for judging.
Here is what the judgeshad to say about the winning image:
“It’s a challenge to judge images of such diverse subject matter and mood against each other in an effort to pick the “best.” The winning image by Michael Holahan of The Augusta Chronicle succeeded by any measure in translating such raw emotion as that of distraught parents. Michael Robinson, Sr. and Chinikka Jackson are in utter despair over the loss of their 12 year-old son Melquan, who was accidentally electrocuted at a ball field. They’re not only lost in the depths of their own grief, but they’re also hugging two of their son’s friends, who were injured themselves trying to pull the boy to safely. It’s a gripping scene.”
