Bill Church

Where you work

Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Job title

Executive Editor

Brief career history

Got a D in high school journalism for "attitude" issues. Once held the Pac Man record at Weaver's Tavern in Yukon, Oklahoma. Otherwise, just a slightly nerdy editor who loves community-level journalism (and ties).

How long have you been a member of the APME Board?

Since 2011

How has being a member of APME helped you as a journalist?

APME is a wonderful and fun organization, thanks to talented and dedicated members who care about the important and evolving roles of journalism on everyday lives. APME is my rock — the Plymouth, Gibraltar and emotional kind — and many of its members have become longtime friends. It's been an honor to work with AP staff through the years. AP sets the standard for our industry.

What projects have you worked on as an APME Board member?

Membership chair in 2011-12; conference co-chair for 2013, 2014 and 2016; diversity chair 2014-16; current vice president.

What is a recent challenge you faced in your newsroom and how did you overcome it?

I prefer to see challenges as opportunities.

What is your most rewarding career accomplishment?

Working with so many talented and dedicated journalists. The newsroom is my happy place (most days).

What’s your favorite quote or motto?

John Wooden: "Be quick but don't hurry."

The famed UCLA basketball coach understood the importance of setting priorities while focusing on people.

If you had an extra hour during a day what would you do with it?

Surf. Read the classics. Listen to the classics. Do good deeds. Or maybe I'd nap.
