The APME has honored the attached photograph as National Member Photo of the Month for February 2017.
Thanks to Photography Editor Rich Saal and staff Photographer Justin L. Fowler at The State Journal-Register in Springfield, IL. for judging this month.
Here is what the judges had to say about the winning image:
"We've chosen as the winner a photograph by the Chicago Tribune's Nuccio DiNuzzo that captured the emotional reunion of Baraa Haj Khalaf and her mother at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago after Haj Khalaf arrived from Syria with husband and their 16-month-old daughter. It occurred during the period when the travel ban issued by President Donald Trump was on hold and being reviewed by a federal court in California. The family had waited two years in a Turkish refugee camp and had finally gained clearance to enter the country when Trump's ban was issued and they were suddenly denied access. DiNuzzo's photo synthesized the anguish and chaos occurring at airports across the U.S. immediately after the ban was announced. "
In this Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 photo, Baraa Haj Khalaf, left, gets a kiss from her mother, Fattuom Bakir, after arriving at O'Hare International Airport, in Chicago. Baraa and Abduljmajeed Haj Khalaf and their daughter, who were told last week they couldn't fly to Chicago because of President Donald Trump's executive order on refugees, made it to their new home.
