Train in social, video, mobile and data at New England NewsTrain on Oct. 14, 2017 


The Particulars

When: 9 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017.

Where: Gerrish School of Business/Judge Science Center (LSB)Endicott College, 376 Hale St, Beverly, MA 01915. Download a campus map (PDF). Beverly is 26 miles north of Boston. Beverly is a 35-minute train ride from the North Station in Boston on the Newburyport/Rockport Line. Train 1101 leaves at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 14, arriving at Beverly at 9:05 a.m. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to be picked up at the Beverly station at 9:05 a.m. and returned there after the workshop.

Cost: Early-bird registration is just $75. The early-bird rate ends Sept. 14, increasing to $85 on Sept. 15.

Is this workshop for you? This workshop is for reporters, editors and other journalists from print, digital and broadcast newsrooms of all sizes, as well as journalism educators and students. Public information officers and public relations specialists have also benefited from attending NewsTrain. You do not have to be a member of APME to attend.

Diversity scholarships: The deadline to apply for a competitive diversity scholarship for New England NewsTrain is extended to Sept. 15, 2017. Sept. 6, 2017. Applications are open to journalists, journalism educators or journalism students from a diverse background, Successful applicants have their registration fee waived; they must pay their own travel expenses. In addition to completing the online application , applicants should email a resume and up to three work samples to Rony Camille with CBS Boston. Journalism educators need not send work samples.

What to bring: A fully charged laptop and smartphone with earbuds for the exercises.

Parking: Free. A shuttle will run between Lot 35 and the workshop venue.

You Will Learn How To:

  • Use social media as a reporting tool and verify user-generated content.

  • Develop an engaging voice in writing news posts for Twitter and Facebook that will help get your stories read.

  • Shoot short, shareable smartphone video using a tripod and external microphone, and sequence the best five shots in sharp focus with high-quality audio.

  • Identify the best way to tell a particular story on a small screen: digest, explainer, bulleted live updates or what-we-know lists, photo, video, graphic, audio, games, curation, or some combination.

  • Identify a data set from your beat that will likely produce a story, and sort and filter in Excel to locate a potential story.

As the innovation and workshops editor at The New York Times, Theodore Kim  creates best practices for emerging story forms and then scales that training to the newsroom. Previously, he was a Times assistant news editor, guiding the nightly digital report. Prior to coming to The Times, he was mobile editor at The Washington Post. He also worked as a reporter for the Dallas Morning News, USA Today and the Indianapolis Star. He is a former national secretary of the Asian American Journalists Association. He has a master's degree in journalism from American University. @TheoTypes

Cindy E. Rodríguez is a senior journalist-in-residence at Emerson College in Boston. She has 20+ years experience as a reporter and has taught journalism for 15+ years. She has worked for, The Boston Globe and The Denver Post and has been published in The New York Times, The Village Voice and Latina magazine. She’s a mobile journalist, meaning she knows how to produce video and audio packages for the web using mobile devices and apps. She's also adept at using social media. She is a former vice president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. She has a master's degree in digital media from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.  @CindyERodriguez

Daniel Victor is a senior staff editor at The New York Times, where he spent his first two years as a social media editor. He now reports for the Times' Express Team, a breaking-news desk that covers news readers are searching for and talking about online. Prior to arriving at The Times in 2012, he ran social media and crowdsourcing for ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom for investigative journalism. Before that he launched a hyperlocal site for and The Philadelphia Inquirer. He was a community host for TBD, a website/TV station that covered local news and sports in Washington. He began his career with four years as a reporter for The (Harrisburg, Pa.) Patriot-News, where he had almost every beat at the paper: cops and courts, local government, state government, national politics, features and just about everything in between. He wrote for the Centre Daily Times while attending Penn State and enjoyed a summer internship at The Wichita (Kansas) Eagle. @bydanielvictor

Todd Wallack  is a reporter for the Boston Globe Spotlight team, where he specializes in data journalism. He won national awards  from the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Society of Professional Journalists in 2016 for his work on public records and has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize three times. Prior to joining the Globe in 2007, he worked for the San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Herald, Dayton Daily News and other publications. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. @TWallack

Getting your story read: maximizing social media for branding and audience engagement Trainer Daniel Victor offers tactics and tips to improve your writing on social media, establish your brand, encourage community engagement, and measure how well your social media efforts are working.

Using social media as powerful reporting tools Social media can be used as powerful reporting tools, which are valuable whether you're facing a big breaking news story or an enterprise project. Learn from Daniel Victor how to use social media platforms and complementary websites to locate expert and “real people” sources, crowdsource using Google Forms, contact a source on social media responsibly and create a social dossier on a newsmaker.

Viral video: shooting shareable smartphone video Columbia’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism studied what makes for successful news video and recommended that reporters shoot fast, raw clips posted instantly from the field, leaving in-depth, more sophisticated video stories to highly trained video journalists. Learn from Cindy Rodríguez how to produce those clips of under one minute with minimal editing. Use a tripod and external microphone and sequence your best five shots to create shareable video – without getting in the way of your reporting. Bring your smartphone for the exercises. 

Storytelling on mobile: making smart choices Forty-four of the 50 largest newspapers get the majority of their digital traffic on mobile. Trainer Theodore Kim introduces a new storytelling tool kit to attract and better serve our audience on mobile. On a small screen, what’s the best way to tell a particular story: digest, explainer, bulleted live updates or what-we-know lists, photo, video, graphic, audio, games, curation, or some combination? And what are the tools to make that happen as efficiently as possible?

Data-driven enterprise off your beat How do you fit enterprise stories around the many other demands you face as a beat reporter to write dailies, file web updates, tweet and shoot video? One way is to take advantage of the plethora of local data available online to spot and develop unique stories for your news outlet. All you need is either you or someone else in your newsroom who can download and sort databases in a spreadsheet program, such as Excel. Learn from trainer Todd Wallack how to find and analyze data, enabling you to spot the enterprise stories in the numbers, whether your beat is sports, health, business, education, local government or cops and courts. Bring your laptop for the exercises.
