The nonprofit organization of newsroom leaders has sponsored NewsTrain since 2003, training more than 7,300 journalists in cities across the United States and Canada.

Host a NewsTrain on your own turf

Apply by April 30 to bring APME’s NewsTrain affordable digital training to your area in 2019

If you’re looking to bring affordable, digital training to your newsroom in 2019, consider hosting one of APME’s NewsTrain workshops.

To experience the learning, morale boost and fun of a NewsTrain workshop in your town, the first steps are to put together a tentative host committee of representatives from local journalism organizations, and apply by April 30 at

Successful host committees work hand-in-glove with the NewsTrain staff over six months to plan and promote their workshops. The skills taught are customized to the needs of journalists in your region and designed to be used immediately.

The host committee’s financial obligation includes supplying food for either a one-day or two-day workshop attracting 100. It should seek local sponsors to cover that cost, which can run $1,500 to $3,000. The host committee also markets the workshop regionally and secures a venue, usually a university site. APME engages the accomplished trainers.

The payback is smarter, more engaged and enthusiastic journalists, journalism students and journalism educators in your region.

“It’s simply the best training ever,” said Tina Ongkeko, managing director of member services for News Media Canada and host-committee chair for four NewsTrains. “The organization, program development and execution of NewsTrains are top-notch.”

Since 2003, Associated Press Media Editors (APME) has produced 88 NewsTrains in the United States and Canada, training more than 7,300 journalists.

AP names Nancy Benac as White House news editor

Nancy Benac, a veteran Washington journalist who has covered the presidency and national political campaigns, has been named White House news editor at The Associated Press.

The appointment was announced by Julie Pace, AP's Washington bureau chief.

Benac will lead a team of AP reporters covering all aspects of President Donald Trump's White House, one of the most competitive and closely watched beats in the world. She's overseen the White House team on an interim basis since last summer.

Benac has worked for the AP for more than 35 years, covering government and politics.

New AP global enterprise team is named

Vice President for Global Enterprise Marjorie Miller announced AP's new global enterprise reporting team. It will be dedicated to helping AP journalists around the world produce ambitious, multiformat journalism that breaks news and offers customers distinctive enterprise that they cannot get elsewhere.

In the field, the global enterprise team of award-winning journalists (including U.S. national writers) will report to Pauline Arrillaga, the U.S. enterprise editor, and to Mary Rajkumar, the international enterprise editor.

Jeannie Ohm is the enterprise video editor. Enric Marti is the enterprise photo editor. And Natalie Castaneda is joining Raghu Vadarevu's enterprise digital storytelling team as a producer.


Former Washington Post reporter, editor Michael Getler dies at 82

Michael Getler, a Washington Post foreign correspondent and editor who later led the Paris-based International Herald Tribune and served as an incisive in-house media critic at The Post and PBS, died March 15 at a hospice center in Washington. He was 82.

The cause was complications from bile duct cancer, said his wife, Sandra Getler.

A former Navy aviator and defense-magazine writer, Mr. Getler joined The Post as a military affairs reporter in 1970 during the waning years of the Vietnam War. He later chronicled Cold War tensions from Bonn, the capital of West Germany. In subsequent editing roles, including as assistant managing editor for foreign news, he directed coverage that resulted in two Pulitzer Prizes for international reporting.

Founder and editor of Kansas LGBTQ newspaper dies

The founder and editor of the Liberty Press, a Kansas-based LGBTQ newspaper with the motto, "We were gay before it was cool," has died.

The Wichita Eagle reports that Kristi Parker died after suffering a stroke. She was 49.

Parker grew up in Wichita and, in 1994, became co-chairperson of the city's committee that organized an annual celebration of the area's gay and lesbian community. She produced a guide for the event, selling ads and writing stories.

The guide evolved, and Parker established the Liberty Press the same year. The monthly publication eventually grew to average about 60 pages with 5,000 copies printed in each run, winning national awards.
